We will start by defining embalming with an emphasis on the chemicals used to achieve the goals of embalming. We will then take a step back and look a several historical figures and the embalming chemicals they used. We will build on this with a look at how formaldehyde was used in the past and introduce other aldehyde preservatives. The next topic will be to cover the molecular reaction of preservatives with tissue. We’ll finish with the advantages and disadvantages of aldehyde use and a discussion about fluid selection based on preservative demand.
